Rep. Luetkemeyer Criticizes CFPB Credit Card Late Fee Rule

Today, Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO-03) voiced his concerns over the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) rule regarding credit card late fees. In response to the rule, Luetkemeyer criticized the Biden Administration's approach, accusing them of prioritizing campaign messaging over the well-being of working families.

Luetkemeyer expressed his apprehensions about the implications of the rule, stating, “Like nearly every action taken by the CFPB under Rohit Chopra, this rulemaking will result in higher upfront costs for accessing credit and eliminate credit options for the poorest Americans.” He further added, “The motivation behind these moves is clear: give the President something other than his disastrous record to discuss at the State of the Union while giving, potentially unconstitutional, bureaucracies more control over our personal finances.”

The Congressman's remarks highlight his belief that the rule could potentially have adverse effects on individuals' access to credit and financial options, particularly impacting those in vulnerable financial situations. Luetkemeyer's criticism underscores his concerns about the broader implications of the CFPB's actions under the current administration.

As the debate surrounding the CFPB's credit card late fee rule continues, Rep. Luetkemeyer's comments shed light on the differing perspectives and concerns within the political landscape regarding financial regulations and consumer protections.
