The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has expanded its offerings for individuals seeking to measure their High School Equivalency skills. Previously, DESE only offered the HiSET test, but now it has added the GED test as an option. Both tests provide an accredited Missouri High School Equivalency Certificate upon passing.
The cost for taking the computer-based GED test ranges from $142 to $181.96. Meanwhile, the computer-based HiSET test currently costs between $98.75 and $151.25, though this will increase in January 2024 to a range of $120 to $172.50. Detailed information about the requirements and differences between these exams can be found at hse.mo.gov.
According to estimates by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Missourians with a secondary credential earn on average $9,000 more annually compared to those without such credentials.
To facilitate the credentialing process, DESE has partnered with DiplomaSender for High School Equivalency data management services. Individuals who earn their equivalency can obtain their certificate through diplomasender.com.
DESE also offers free virtual and face-to-face classroom instruction for eligible Missourians preparing for High School Equivalency tests, taught by certified educators. More information on classes and locations is available at ael.mo.gov.
Testing sites for the GED exam are still being finalized, with updates to be provided at hse.mo.gov as they become available.
