Greg Kester, a social studies teacher at Potosi High School within the Potosi R-III School District, has been named the 2024 Missouri Teacher of the Year. Selected by a committee comprising his peers and educational partners across the state, Kester is now the 55th recipient of this award since its inception in 1957.
Kester emphasizes student-directed learning and encourages students to take ownership of their education. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies Education and a Master of Arts with an emphasis on Teaching from Southeast Missouri State University. After graduating with his bachelor's degree, he joined Potosi High School and has remained there throughout his career. His roles have included department chair, cadet teaching coordinator, and faculty sponsor for the Future Teachers of America club.
"Relationships are my greatest accomplishments as an educator," said Kester. "I would gladly give back all of the accolades and awards I have won if I had to choose between them or the connection I have with my present and former students."
Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven commented on Kester's achievement: "Missouri is fortunate to have so many passionate, dedicated educators, and Greg is a wonderful example of the best of our teacher workforce." She added that Kester exemplifies how schools can cultivate future teachers through initiatives like his teacher training program.
Kester aims to inspire future educators not only with passion but also with compassion for their students. He believes that passion without compassion is merely directionless energy.
Residing in Festus with his wife and two children, Kester will represent Missouri in the National Teacher of the Year program. He will be honored at DESE’s Teacher of the Year recognition event in Columbia on October 16, alongside other finalists, semi-finalists, and Regional Teachers of the Year.
The Missouri Teacher of the Year program highlights effective teachers' efforts to provide high-quality education. Christina Andrade Melly from Ritenour High School was recognized as the 2023 Missouri Teacher of the Year.
