The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in Missouri has allocated the first-ever state-funded "Grow Your Own" grants to 125 local education agencies (LEAs). This initiative, part of DESE's Fiscal Year 2024 budget, includes $2.5 million designated for one-time grants of $10,000 each. These funds aim to establish or enhance local programs designed to recruit quality teachers across the state.
Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven emphasized the importance of teachers, stating, "Teachers remain the number one school-level factor that can impact student achievement." She expressed gratitude towards the General Assembly for acknowledging the urgent need to address Missouri's educator workforce shortage and recognizing the significance of Grow Your Own programs in resolving this issue.
These programs focus on attracting local students and non-certified school staff, such as paraprofessionals and substitute teachers, into teaching careers. They also provide support through post-secondary education and certification paths. The funding supports various activities like dual credit courses, scholarships for high school students, student internships, and opportunities for other adults to pursue certification as teachers.
Ashlee Pettigrew from Tipton R-VI School District explained their approach: “We begin with students attending Tipton High School and guide them to enroll in our new course Introduction to Education, offered in collaboration with the University of Central Missouri.” This program mentors prospective teacher candidates through cadet teaching and field experience.
Carey L. Drehle from Montrose School District highlighted community understanding: “Making sure our staff understands our small rural farming community and its needs is really important.” Drehle noted that recruiting local students is crucial for their future success.
LEAs applied through a competitive grant process. Funds must be obligated by May 31, 2024. Additionally, funding was provided for Grow Your Own grants to 15 educator preparation programs and five community colleges.
