The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) presented preliminary statewide assessment data for the 2022-23 academic year during the State Board of Education meeting on August 15. The data encompasses results from mandatory state assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics for grades 3-8, Science for grades 5 and 8, and End-of-Course (EOC) assessments in English II, Algebra I, Biology, and Government. Results for optional EOC tests in American History, Algebra I, English I, Geometry, and Physical Science were also shared.
When compared to the previous year, the preliminary results show mixed outcomes. Overall scores across the state have yet to return to pre-pandemic levels. In ELA, elementary grades and high school saw slight improvements while middle school scores either declined or remained flat. Mathematics scores experienced small increases across most grades and courses. Science scores largely remained unchanged except for an increase in Biology. Social studies outcomes were varied.
“Districts and charter schools across the state are eager to begin a new school year focused on the well-being and academic success of students,” stated Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. “This year’s data emphasize the need to continue our efforts deploying state and local resources to best support and promote student learning.”
Further details about the preliminary assessment data can be found in materials provided to the State Board of Education. District and school-level data will be available by December when finalization is complete.
