Six individuals will be recognized for their significant contributions to public education in Missouri at the 63rd Annual Cooperative Conference for School Administrators. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) will honor these Pioneers in Education on July 29 during a luncheon attended by over 600 school leaders.
Commissioner of Education Karla Eslinger stated, "These individuals have been true champions for education in Missouri throughout their careers, advocating for students and embodying our department’s mission to provide access to opportunities." She added that DESE is honored to recognize their hard work and dedication.
The honorees include Jeanette Cowherd from Kansas City, who has had a dual career as a band director and school administrator. Her efforts included developing the LEAD Innovation Studio high school program and collaborating on online coursework initiatives.
Pam Hedgpeth from Clever began her educational career as a fifth-grade teacher before advancing to leadership roles. She currently serves as Executive Director of the Greater Ozarks Cooperating School Districts, supporting over 100 districts with professional learning and educational advocacy.
Mike Jones from St. Louis has an extensive public service career spanning four decades. He served on the Missouri State Board of Education until 2020 and contributed to local governance in Normandy until last year.
Richard Presberry from Jefferson City started his career with DESE's Vocational Rehabilitation section before moving into academia at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He later developed tutoring programs at Lincoln University.
Bill Rebore from St. Charles transitioned from teaching social studies to becoming an educational leader at Saint Louis University, where he created programs such as the Executive Doctor of Education Program.
Gary Romine from Farmington began his career in education before entering politics, where he served on several committees related to education. He was appointed chair of the Missouri State Tax Commission in January 2020 by Governor Parson.
The Pioneer in Education awards have been presented by state officials for 49 years, recognizing distinguished careers and contributions across various sectors involved in public education in Missouri.
